Version 3 you say?

So a while ago Spartan Games collapsed under its own weight and the Dystopian Wars franchise was purchased by Warcradle Studios. The studio is owned by Wayland Games in the UK (an online retailer of games) and is known for producing the Wild West Exodus steampunk skirmish game. I’ve not played the game but it looks fun and has been slowly growing for several years.

Warcradle is now planning to release an updated version of the Dystopian Wars rules as a public beta in the next few months and I am looking forward to seeing what they produce. As much as I liked the game it was mostly my interest in the models that brought me into the game. The first version of the rules was a mess and while the second version improved the game in some dramatic fashions it was still a bit of a kludge.

No real word on what features will be in the new game but it has certainly got me to pull out my Prussians and French fleets to finish them off.

Shroud Mage Stats

I put together some stat cards for the four fleets that we will be using for the Faire Winds and Foule Tides participation event tomorrow. Every fleet except for the Dwarves has a Mage and I am using the Hydromancer and the Mindbender so that we can test those Mages for Nic. I created a quick scenario for the game and I also had to make some stats for the Shroud Mage ships. I did a guesstimate for the cost for the Medium Broadsides ability. The idea is that the Shroud Mage ships have medium ranged broadsides that fire a fiery chemical attack and also have normal cannons on the bow. It requires a bit of a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ on the stats as technically they don’t actually restrict fire in the way I want them to.

So here are the stats for the 396 point Shroud Mage fleet.

Shroud Flagship

Shroud Mages done

So I finally finished the final fleet for the Fayre Winds & Foul Tides demo game. These are a mix of first and second generation Shroud Mage vessels from the Uncharted Seas range from Spartan Games. The difference between the sculpts is really shocking. The second generation were computer designed and look significantly better than the original versions. I actually have a second fleet of the first generation ships but I really doubt if they will ever be painted. I dislike them enough that I may give them away to anyone at the demo who is interested in them. I am eagerly trying to find some more of the second generation ships though.

I am still trying to determine how to stat them out for Fayre Winds & Foul Tides. I may need to do some house rules for them as I want the vessels to have broadside firing medium range flame weapons and then normal ranged Heavy Chaser guns in the bow.

Three fleets done

So the Orc vessels are done and I thought it would be fun to take out all of the ships and get some pictures of them all together. Sadly I can’t fit them all into one shot with my phone so I ended up taking shots of each individual fleet.

Oddly enough will I have painted submerged versions of my Dwarven submarines I never finished the surface versions so I will have to add those to the painting table and get them done.

More fantasy naval painting

The Orc fleet is taking form as I am in the final stage of finishing the painting. I need to finish the sails and then seal them. The sails are probably going to take some work as I need to shade them and then paint a pattern into the sails. I want something bold and eye-catching as these are the only ships I currently have that use sails.

Once those are done I have a few more vessels to paint and then a giant and a bastion. I noticed a few new Orc ships at the store last night and picked those up as well but I am not sure when I will get to them. I also have a small stash of Dragon Lord figures on hold at the store and those might be getting painted soon.

More fantasy naval vessels painted

I had some time to paint today so I was able to finish off a few more Uncharted Seas miniatures. I did some quick repainting on the Bone Griffons Flagship as well as the three Cruisers. They were painted when I picked them up in a trade but they didn’t match the way I painted the other Bone Griffon vessels. The sails on the Cruisers also didn’t match the darker tone of the vessels and so I repainted them in a dark grey and then drybrushed them. The final layers of drybrushing had some fluorescent green to give them a slight glow.

Newly painted for me are the two Heavy Cruisers. I don’t know how I will stat them out for Galleys & Galleons but they have an enormous bow-mounted cannon that looks quite impressive. The Iron Dwarf fleet now has a painted Flagship to lead them so I will no longer need to use my Battleship.

Up on the painting table is the Iron Dwarf Bellows Airship and several small boats to use for the Necromancer’s Raise Dead spell. I am also slowing working my way through a sizeable set of Ork ships as well.
