Warpath units

The Epic Warpath Kickstarter has launched and is already funded. As suspected, they have posted more photos of the miniatures that will be in the fore army boxes as well as some of the models that will be in the reinforcement packs. At launch there will be models for the Enforcers, Plague, Asterians and Forge Fathers. There is also a stretch goal that will add the Veermyn. So lets have a look what each faction has available and what the reinforcement packs will (possibly) contain.

One thing to note immediately – all of the reinforcement and Super Heavy troops will be available as digital files so you can print them as you need. So Mantic will sell core army boxes to folks and then they can expand with resin printed models if they want. You can also buy resin figures. This seems like a smart approach.

The rest of the article makes conjectures about what the ‘mystery’ models are in the Kickstarter graphics so if you would rather not, potentially, have them ruined you have been warned.

Enforcers

Core Army box

So not a lot of surprises here. I think that most of these miniatures were used in the demo video but the images from the KS page show them all in a bit more detail. There is no higher ranking leader in the box aside from the Sergeant and there being six of the implies that you can spread multiple leaders through your force to help remove Pin markers.

It also seems as if the three main vehicles for the Enforcers all share the same hull with the difference being the turret mounted weapons and APC hatches. You can’t see the back of the vehicles but I suspect that I would leave them off and magnetise the turrets so I can mix and match vehicles as needed.

Enforcer reinforcements

A few hidden units but they should be simple to figure out. The Victor MKII tank looks very nice as does the Enforcer Captain. The Day 2 reveal is most likely a Strider. The Day 6 reveal looks like a Peacekeeper Captain and the Day 10 reveal looks like Pathfinders. Day 14 looks as if it is the Accuser Interceptor and a Persecutor Bomber but both aircraft have the same weapons so it might be the Enforcer and a transport variant?

Enforcer Super Heavy

With no minis shown next to it, it is difficult to see how big this will be but I already have concerns with it staying on a flight stand. It doesn’t have any heavy weapons on it so I suspect that it might be the Enforcer version of a Thunderhawk. Which would be awesome. Dumping out Peacekeepers and Striders from this would be great.

Plague

Plague Core box

Again, nothing that we didn’t see in the demo video but it is nice to see more detailed images. There are a lot of Zombies in the core box but the core of the force appears to be the Ghouls. Interestingly, the Enforcer and Plague core boxes both have the same number of heavy weapon stands. The Plague have fewer potential APCs than the Enforcers and no AFV options.

Plague Reinforcements

In the Reinforcement pack the Plague get a second Leader and the Aberration. It isn’t a Plague Party with an Aberration! The Day 7 reveal looks to be the Lancer Battle Tank and the Day 15 reveal is the TAD-65 Hornet but I have no idea what the second aircraft could be as the Hornet already has a transport capacity. The Day 11 reveal looks to be the Ghoul Mortar team but I am at a loss to figure out what the Day 3 mini is.

Plague Super Heavy

As with the Enforcer Cruiser, there is no way to know how big the Colossus is but it does look as if it is hungry and ready to mess things up. It seems to be an odd unit since the Plague are supposed to infect the available population and then mutate them.

Asterians

Asterian Core box

And finally the good guys! Pretty much what you would expect in an Asterian army except for the drones. There are twice as many Sky Razors as there are Enforcer Jetbikes so an Asterian army may be a bit faster on the board. There is no mention in the photo if the Chira and Chroma are the same vehicle with different turrets. I have to assume that they are. This image only references six total vehicles. I am not sure if that is accurate but if it is it means that the Asterian infantry won’t have the same mobility as the Enforcers or the Forge Fathers. The Wraith being a distinct model means that the Asterians will also have fewer dedicated light tank units than the Enforcers.

Asterian Reinforcements

Some interesting choices here. The Kalyshi are expected and I would suspect that they would be equipped with both bows and glaives. The Matsudans are a nice surprise and it is also nice to see the Blade Masters. There are a number of Matsudan units and the one here is the Inushi so this may be a close combat unit and not the Yokozuna heavy weapon team. The Day 9 reveal looks as if it will be the Black Talons and Day 5 looks as if it is an Overseer. The Day 13 vehicle seems to be the Narsa Support Drone with the last two being the Assault and Command variants. The lack of smaller drones as infantry support does seem to be an odd omission.

Asterian Super Heavy

Its a Warlock Titan Aedis Clade Warden Super Heavy Walker! It looks as if it will come with ranged and assault options as well as multiple weapon options. Out of all of the Super Heavy models shown this looks to be the best of the bunch. I wonder how difficult it will be to magnetise it and have all of the options available?

Forge Fathers

Forge Father Core box

The troops available seem to be on par with the other Core boxes. There are fewer Magna Cannon turrets than Sturnhammer bodies so you won’t be able to put out 18 Hata Pattern tanks. Also there doesn’t seem to be an option for the Hailstorm cannon or the Dragonbreath Flamer. That may just be due to the early stage of the modelling. Or perhaps they only want to have the Drakkar and the Hata Pattern as vehicles? It is also probably an early render so I won’t comment on the detail and sizing of the Sturnhammer. The image for the Hultr looks as if it was taken at an odd angle.

Forge Father Reinforcements

Very happy to see the Jotunn weapon platforms as well as the Valkyrs. No idea if there will be multiple variants of the Jotunn. If Mantic is selling STL files it might be possible for them to provide multiple variants. These are all images from the Firefight books at the moment though but it will be interesting to see the 3D models when they are provided. The Day 4 unit looks as if it is the Brokkr infantry and the Day 12 models look like the the Hammerfist Drop Squads. Orbital drops with heavy armoured dwarves seems like a great way to have fun. The Day 8 model is probably a Huscarl and while the outline looks familiar I can’t recall which version of the Huscarl it is. And I am at a loss as to what the Day 16 model is but a Forge Father ground attack aircraft would be great!

I am not sure why they are adding the Juggernought and not another Iron Ancestor variant like the Doomstorm or the Hellermal. I’m not even aware of a Juggernought model that was available that wasn’t for a Forge Father.

Forge Father Super Heavy

Well, this looks dangerous. Four cannons on the treads for anti-infantry fire and then an enormous cannon to punch a hole through a Colossus or the Aedis Clade Warden.

Overall

I think Mantic have, with the exception of the Asterian drones, hit most of the units that you would want to see if an epic scale Warpath game. I suspect that the drones are not in the game as Matt and the team don’t want to have to spend the time and energy it would take to balance them. Now word yet if there are multipart models for things like the Iron Ancestors. I suspect that there will not be as they will probably want to keep the design of the sprues as simple as possible.

It will be fun to see the reveals (and see how many I got correct) and also to see if there will be any pictures of an assembled Aedis Clade Warden. I really want to see how big that thing is :-)
